THE NEED NEXT DOOR

Hunger here doesn’t look like hunger.

New Hampshire is one of the wealthiest states in the country, and the need is still climbing. It looks like a full-time job that doesn’t cover a rent increase. It looks like a kid whose school lunch was the reliable meal of the day, and it’s July. The steepest jumps in the latest Feeding America data landed in Hillsborough and Strafford counties — where most of our stores are — and they hit children hardest.

We split the drive by geography so food lands close to where it was given. Collections from our Manchester-area stores go to Families in Transition; collections from our Seacoast stores go to Gather.

Working to prevent and break the cycle of homelessness.

A statewide nonprofit headquartered in Manchester, with additional locations in Concord, Dover and Wolfeboro. Food is one piece of a larger safety net that also includes emergency shelter, housing programs, substance use treatment and case management.

Gather

Feeding the Seacoast since 1816.

Founded by a group of women determined to feed the families of Seacoast fishermen, Gather is one of the oldest social service agencies in the country — and it now runs some of the most inventive food access programs in the region.

Give dollars instead

Both pantries buy in bulk and rescue fresh food, so a dollar usually goes further than a can. At Gather, ninety cents of every dollar goes straight to local hunger relief.

Families in Transition needs volunteers to sort donations, stock shelves and check visitors out. Gather needs hands to turn food into to-go meals and to staff its Mobile Markets.

Both welcome corporate groups.
